Bachelor of Songs

I had made a brief visit to Thane last week.

By the week end there was a programme organised by the local Ayyappa Sewa Sangam, in the apartment complex where my friends are staying. They had organized for the playing of “Panja Vadhiyam” and the bhajans on lord ayyappan.

It reminded me of my childhood days. My father used to go to sabari mala every year during those days.
Also, I remember, how, when and why I wanted to write kavidhaigal.
1) Ayyappan Bhajans
2) History & Geography Teacher (when I was in 5th Class)

When I was 8, I started accompanying my father, to such Bhajans. I still remember, I used to enthusiastically participate and repeat the lyrics of songs sung during the bhajans in a high pitched voice.

At that age, I thought that I also could write and sing, songs of my own to appease God.

For me, writing such kind of lyrics were so simple :- No concepts, just fill the song with a mixture of requests, wishes, prayers, and calling the God in between in by whatever name that comes in mind. Sentences like “I will come with Wealth and Money, you give my peace of mind” etc., were too important in such songs.

After getting trained “eternally“, I extended the practice of writing songs on “Worldly Affairs” too, on subjects like philosophy, education, love, patriotism (call Gandhi, Ahimsa, Bharathiar, Kashmir, etc). In the due course, it had become a habit that I started writing such lyrics in my school notebooks.

One day one of my class mate when I was in my 5th Class (at the age of 10) noticed such lyrics, and informed my class teacher ( no name please…) who was teaching History & Geography. He initially thought that I had written filmy songs in my notebooks. Without seeing what exactly it was, he had beaten me badly.

Now, since his “teachings” were over, he had time to go through the song. Then he asked me, “I have never heard of this song, which film is this ?” I told him very humbly, “Sir, I wrote this song by myself. This is not any film song.” The song I wrote was probably a duet !!! ( no, no, no, no, I didn’t have any girl friends at that time).

He didn’t want to buy my “story”. He looked at me, and told, “…..so you write songs ! good. Now, I’ll tell you a situation, you write a song for that. Let’s see what you write. The Hero who had a love failure, is taking part in a Janawasam (Bharaat in other parts of India) of his ex-girlfriend. Go somewhere if you want and write immediately. Your time starts now !!!! “

It was a challenge for, me, I ran to the corner of the school play ground with a piece of paper and pen, and started writing whatever that came into my mind. (Kavidhai Aruvi madhiri Kottudhu, abirami, abirami,…).
Ten minutes hence, I handed over my “Kavidhai” (of 16 lines) to him.

He was really impressed, and told me, “Good work, keep it up…” and kept the kavidhai with himself.
That motivated me to graduate to “Pudhukavidhai” (shayari), “Haikoo” and the likes…and I called my self “Bharathipiriyan” (like Bharathidasan !!!! ).

That’s all fine, there are two ends to this story:-
1) Now I don’t write songs in any of its forms.
2) The class teacher mentioned above is still a Bachelor.
